Because of severe birth defects caused by Accutane, it has been compared to Thalidomide, perhaps the most famous teratogen in history, notorious for causing horrific fetal abnormalities in the early 1950s until it was pulled off the market. A teratogen is an agent that can cause malformations of an embryo or fetus. Accutane is a known teratogen.

Major human fetal abnormities related to Accutane administration in females have been documented. There is an increased risk of spontaneous abortio. In addition, premature births have been reported
Documented external abnormalities include; skull abnormity; ear abnormalities (including anotia, micropinna, small or abscent external auditory canals); eye abnormaltites (including microphthalmia); facial dysmorphia; cleft palate. Documented internal abnormalities include; CNS abnormalities (including cerebral abnormalities, cerebellar malformation, hydrocephalus, microcephaly, cranial nerve deficit); cardiovascular abnormalities; thymus gland abnormality, parathyroid hormone defficiency.In some cases death has occured with certain of the abnormalities previously noted.
Cases of IQ scores less than 85 with ot without obvious CNS abnormalities have also been reported.
